Blackjack Basic Strategy
Basic strategy is based on the mathematics behind blackjack. The concept of an optimal strategy to play Blackjack was born in 1953 in the USA. A group of soldiers, Roger Baldwin, Wilbert Cantey, Herbert Maisel and James McDermott developed it. It took them a year and a half to come up with basic strategy. Later simulations with computers proved that their strategy was virtually perfect. These Four Horsemen as they were called in the blackjack community were inducted into the Blackjack Hall of Fame in Las Vegas in 2008.
Basic Strategy if used correctly reduces the house edge to the minimum. Nobody could invent something better. Basic Blackjack Strategy is the best way to play every hand.
To win in Blackjack the player must play each hand in the optimum way, and such strategy always takes into consideration what the dealer's up card is. For example, if the dealer shows 7, 8, 9, 10, or ace, the player may hit until his hand reaches a total of 17 or more. When the dealer's up card is 4, 5, or 6, the player should stop hitting as soon as his hand totals 12 or higher. And you can draw until you have 13 or more when the dealer’s up card is 2, or 3. The strategy is never to draw a card if there’s any chance of going bust. Basic strategy is given in charts and tells the player what to do — hit, stand, split, double, or surrender in any possible situation. This strategy shows what decision increases the player’s odds, and decreases the casino advantage.
If you want to benefit from the blackjack basic strategy, you must use it properly. As it has been mentioned above all steps are mathematically proven to be optimal, and any deviation increases the house edge. However, sometimes, if you feel you will surely win (I don’t think intuition is the worst thing) you can step aside.
Basic strategy is based on odds and probabilities, so it can’t guarantee you that each hand will win. You will certainly lose some of your hands, however, in the long run you will win more and you will be able to beat the casinos.
To sum up, use the basic strategy correctly. You have to use the right chart (find out the number of decks used in the blackjack game you are playing) that is the chart for a single deck game can’t be used when playing the six deck game.
